Visitors to the West End Library in Industry will now be greeted by a unique work of art celebrating books, learning, and imagination.
Local resident Sylvia Waxler recently donated a framed cross-stitch masterpiece titled Library Lions to the Austin County Library System’s West End Library. The intricate piece, which took Waxler 296 days to complete, was specially created for the library and was recently installed for patrons to enjoy.
The title Library Lions is especially fitting. Libraries around the world have a long history of featuring lions at their entrances, symbolizing wisdom and the protection of knowledge. The famous lion statues outside the New York Public Library are among the best-known examples. While Industry’s library may not have room for a pair of stone lions out front, thanks to Sylvia Waxler it now has its own pride of library lions watching over the books from inside.
The artwork features a warm library setting filled with books, cats, and lions. Every detail was carefully stitched by hand, reflecting months of dedication, patience, and craftsmanship.
Library staff expressed their gratitude for the donation, describing the piece as both extraordinary and a wonderful addition to the library. The artwork now hangs prominently in the facility, where visitors can admire the intricate needlework and countless details woven throughout the scene.
The library is also planning a children’s contest inspired by the artwork, encouraging young patrons to take a closer look at the piece and discover some of its hidden features.
A plaque accompanying the display recognizes Waxler’s contribution and notes that Library Lions was created specifically for the Austin County Library System’s West End Library in Industry.
The library extends its sincere thanks to Waxler for sharing her talent and creating a lasting gift that will be enjoyed by library visitors for years to come.
