Google is making its largest state-level investment in company history, announcing a $40 billion expansion in Texas through 2027 that will dramatically increase the state’s role in cloud and artificial-intelligence infrastructure. The tech giant, which says it has “called Texas home for more than 15 years,” will build three new data-center campuses — one in Armstrong County in the Texas Panhandle and two in Haskell County in West Texas near Abilene. The facilities will support Google’s growing cloud services and the massive computing power required for AI.
Energy Commitments and Grid Support
Google emphasized that growth on this scale requires responsible energy planning. The company announced a new $30 million Energy Impact Fund to support and accelerate community energy-efficiency initiatives across Texas. The expansion also includes more than 6,200 megawatts of new energy generation and capacity, achieved through power-purchase agreements with energy developers. One of the Haskell County data-center campuses will be built alongside a solar and battery-storage plant, designed to help offset local grid demand. The company says the data centers will use advanced air-cooling technology to reduce water consumption — an important consideration in West Texas, where water resources are limited.
Workforce Expansion and Training
To support the infrastructure boom, Google is partnering with the Electrical Training ALLIANCE to train current electricians and more than 1,700 apprentices in Texas by 2030. That effort is expected to more than double the projected pipeline of new electricians in the state. The company says this training initiative is essential to ensuring Texas has the skilled workforce needed to build, power, and maintain next-generation AI facilities.
Positioning Texas as a National AI Hub
With this investment, Google reinforces Texas as a rising center of AI development. The new campuses, combined with major commitments in power capacity and skilled labor, are designed to give the United States the “technical backbone to lead the world in AI,” according to Google’s announcement.
