As egg prices remain high, many consumers have turned to liquid egg substitutes for cooking and baking. However, recent recalls may make them rethink their choices.
Cargill Kitchen Solutions, the parent company of Egg Beaters and Bob Evans, has recalled four egg substitute products due to potential contamination. The recall, conducted in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), affects products distributed in at least eight states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas. The FSIS also warns that the products may have been distributed nationwide. An investigation found that the recalled products contain traces of sodium hypochlorite, a chemical commonly used in disinfectants. However, officials state that the health risk to consumers is minimal. Because of this, the recall has been classified as a Class III recall, meaning the products are unlikely to cause health issues.
