The Blinn College football team turned a difficult first half into a statement victory Saturday, rallying from a third-quarter deficit to defeat Kilgore College 34-20 at Cub Stadium in Brenham.
The Buccaneers trailed 10-6 at halftime and fell behind 20-13 midway through the third quarter before erupting for 21 unanswered points. The comeback snapped an eight-game losing streak against Kilgore and gave Blinn its first victory over the Rangers since 2017.
Although the teams are Southwest Junior College Football Conference rivals, Saturday’s meeting was played as a non-conference matchup because of a schedule adjustment. The two teams will meet again later this season in conference play. Kilgore entered Saturday’s game receiving votes in the NJCAA Division I Football Preseason Poll.
Bucs Turn the Game Around in Third Quarter
Blinn struggled to establish its running game early, but the Buccaneers began finding opportunities after halftime behind sophomore running back Bryson Batts and the rest of the offense.
The turnaround began with the defense.
Sophomore defensive back Kingston Cramer intercepted Kilgore quarterback Christian Nunley at the Blinn 2-yard line early in the third quarter, preventing the Rangers from adding to their lead.
Blinn quickly capitalized. Facing third-and-14, sophomore quarterback Jack Emerson connected with a receiver who broke free for a 70-yard touchdown, giving the Buccaneers their first lead of the game at 13-10.
Kilgore answered with a touchdown and later added a field goal to move back in front 20-13 with 7:22 remaining in the third quarter.
The Rangers’ advantage lasted only seconds.
Batts took the ensuing kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown, immediately swinging the momentum back toward Blinn and pulling the Buccaneers within a point.
The Blinn defense struck again on Kilgore’s next possession when freshman defensive back K’hrin Hollerman intercepted Nunley.
Batts then delivered another explosive play, breaking loose for a 56-yard touchdown run as time expired in the third quarter to put Blinn ahead for good.
Defense Forces Three Kilgore Turnovers
Blinn’s defense played a major role in keeping the Buccaneers within striking distance while the offense worked through early struggles.
Kilgore scored a touchdown on its opening possession, but Blinn held the Rangers to just a field goal for the remainder of the first half.
Sophomore defensive end Kamrun Berry and freshman defensive end Chris Carbin consistently pressured Nunley and disrupted the Kilgore backfield.
That pressure helped the Buccaneers produce three interceptions.
Cramer and Hollerman each picked off Nunley during crucial third-quarter possessions, while freshman defensive back E’Ryan Lawrence added an interception on Kilgore’s final offensive series to effectively seal the victory.
Penalties Wipe Away Big Plays
Both teams battled penalties throughout the game, with several potentially game-changing plays erased by flags.
Kilgore appeared to open the game with a kickoff return for a touchdown, but the score was wiped away by a block-in-the-back penalty.
Blinn experienced a similar setback late in the first half. A fake-field-goal sequence appeared to turn into a 90-plus-yard interception return for a touchdown by Hollerman, but an offsides penalty erased the play.
Despite the miscues, the Buccaneers remained within reach.
Blinn scored its first touchdown in the second quarter when Emerson connected with sophomore wide receiver Tavaris Turner-Smith for a 74-yard catch-and-run touchdown. The extra-point attempt was blocked, leaving Blinn behind 7-6.
Kilgore added a field goal as time expired in the first half to take a 10-6 advantage into the locker room.
Blinn Offense Finds Its Rhythm
The Buccaneers became increasingly dangerous offensively as the game progressed.
After Batts’ kickoff return and 56-yard touchdown run pushed Blinn ahead, the Buccaneers added insurance in the fourth quarter.
Emerson directed an 82-yard scoring drive and finished it himself, running eight yards for a touchdown with 5:15 remaining to extend Blinn’s lead to 34-20.
Emerson finished the game with two passing touchdowns and one rushing score while overcoming two interceptions.
Blinn’s offensive line also improved as the game progressed, helping open running lanes and allowing the Buccaneers to generate several explosive plays during their second-half surge.
The combination of Blinn’s improving offense and opportunistic defense proved too much for Kilgore down the stretch.
Blinn Ends Eight-Game Skid Against Rangers
The victory marked Blinn’s first win over Kilgore since 2017 and provided an early test for a Buccaneer team that showed it could recover from turnovers, penalties and multiple deficits.
Blinn’s defense forced three interceptions, while the offense and special teams produced several long scoring plays to turn a 20-13 deficit into a two-touchdown victory.
The Buccaneers will now have a bye week before beginning Southwest Junior College Football Conference play against one of the nation’s top teams.
Blinn will host fourth-ranked Tyler Junior College, a 2025 NJCAA Division I national tournament qualifier, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Cub Stadium in Brenham.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and has captured 53 national championships since 1987.
