Parents and caregivers are invited to attend a free Baby Safety Class at the Knox Memorial Library in Wallis on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, from 10 to 11 a.m. The event is designed to help families learn essential skills and practices to keep their infants safe during everyday routines—from bath time to bedtime.
Hosted by DSHS Southeast Texas in partnership with the Texas Department of State Health Services and Texas Health and Human Services, the class will provide valuable resources, educational materials, and expert guidance—all at no cost.
Participants will receive practical information and hands-on tips focused on two major areas of baby safety:

Preventing Drowning During Bath Time:
Bathing a baby can be a joyful bonding experience, but it also poses serious risks if proper safety measures aren’t followed. Even a small amount of water—just an inch or two—can be dangerous for an infant. The class will discuss how to set up a safe bathing environment, the importance of never leaving a baby unattended, and what steps to take in case of an emergency. -
Safe Sleep Practices:
Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) remain leading causes of death among infants under one year old. Attendees will learn the latest recommendations for creating a safe sleep space—such as placing babies on their backs to sleep, using a firm mattress, avoiding loose bedding and stuffed animals, and keeping the sleep area free from hazards. These simple steps can make a life-saving difference.
According to public health experts, many unintentional injuries among infants occur in everyday settings—often when caregivers are tired, distracted, or unaware of potential dangers. Educational programs like this one empower parents with the knowledge and confidence they need to make safer choices at home. By learning proven safety practices early on, families can reduce risks, prevent accidents, and focus more on enjoying those precious early months with their baby.
