From February 21-24, 2025, Sgt. Eric Villarreal of the Austin County Sheriffโ€™s Office had the incredible opportunity to take part in a guided hunt at the beautiful Double S Ranch in Brady, TX. This special event was made possible by Cedar Hills Outfitters, which generously donates this experience to AHERO each year.

Cedar Hills Outfitters and AHERO bring together 5 to 8 veterans and first responders annually for an unforgettable outdoor adventure, connecting them with supportive and patriotic community members. Through hunting, social activities, and meaningful camaraderie, these events help build lasting friendships, encourage engagement, and boost morale. Best of all, it’s a fully sponsored experienceโ€”covering travel (in most cases), lodging, meals, and an alcohol-free environment, ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable time for all.

The Austin County Sheriff’s Office extended thanks to Billy and Shari Schreiner, founders of Cedar Hills Outfitters (est. 2020), Major Lee Stuckey, U.S. Marine Corps (retired) and founder of AHERO, Shaun Schraeder of Double S Ranch, hunt organizer Robert Byras, and Marcus Poffenberger of Bellville Meat Market for making this amazing experience possible.

AHERO: Healing Veterans and First Responders Through Outdoor Connections

AHERO (America’s Heroes Enjoying Recreation Outdoors) is dedicated to helping veterans and first responders heal from the physical and psychological wounds of service. Through outdoor events and social activities, AHERO fosters support networks, boosts morale, and connects these heroes with resources that improve their quality of life. Founded by retired U.S. Marine Corps Major Lee Stuckey, AHERO was born from his own struggles with combat trauma and a life-changing moment that redirected his mission. After surviving a suicide attempt, Stuckey committed himself to preventing veteran suicides by sharing his story and providing support.

Operated by OIF and OEF Marine Corps and Army veterans, AHERO runs on efficiencyโ€”94-98% of donations go directly to program development and support, with minimal overhead costs. With no paid staff, every dollar contributes to making a difference in the lives of those who have served. AHERO stands as a lifeline for veterans and first responders, proving that camaraderie, connection, and the great outdoors can help restore hope and purpose.
