The Horticulture Committee of Austin County and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host a Fall Horticulture Seminar on Friday, Aug. 28, offering area gardeners, landowners and homeowners an afternoon of practical information on vegetable gardening, lawn alternatives and rainwater use.
The seminar will be held at American Legion Post 442, 1630 Meyer St. in Sealy. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m., with the program scheduled from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
Gardening, Turf and Rainwater
The program will feature three presentations focusing on topics that can be put to use in home landscapes and gardens.
Gerald DuPont, a Bluebonnet Master Gardener, will discuss trap plants for vegetable gardens. Trap plants can be incorporated into gardens to attract certain pests away from vegetable crops, giving gardeners another option to consider as part of their overall garden management.
Dr. Manual Chavarria-Sanchez, Extension Program Specialist, will present a program on turf alternatives. The topic offers homeowners an opportunity to learn more about options beyond traditional turfgrass when planning and maintaining their landscapes.
Extension Program Specialist David Smith will round out the afternoon with a presentation on how to utilize rainwater, a topic that can be particularly useful for gardeners and property owners looking for ways to make better use of available water resources.
Fruit and Citrus Tree Sale
The seminar will coincide with the Bluebonnet Master Gardener Fruit & Citrus Tree Sale, which begins at 8 a.m. outside the American Legion and will continue until all trees are sold.
Anyone purchasing a tree from the sale will receive a $5 discount on registration for the horticulture seminar.
Registration for the seminar is $20 per person or $35 per couple. Participants are asked to RSVP by Aug. 24 to reserve a seat.
