BRENHAM, Texas — The Blinn College women’s soccer team shutout Northeast Texas Community College, 5-0, at Rankin Field Tuesday.
“It was great to see our team keep a clean sheet and have a fantastic conversion rate on the chances,” head coach Michael McBride said. “At both ends of the field we were very pleased and that was a great performance.”
With the win, the Buccaneers improve their overall and conference record to 2-0.
“This team has an energy and they really care about each other, and that shows on the field all of the time,” assistant coach Alexandria Jackson said. “When things get hard they really grind it out and they always want to play and get after teams. They are really building confidence after two big conference wins, so I think they will continue to grow and get better.”
The Buccaneers offense was explosive as they outshot Northeast Texas 26-1. Jessica Vital led the Buccaneers with two goals and one assist, while Morgan Zachos recorded one goal and two assists. In addition, Alyssa Gomez scored one goal and Jocelynn Lausell recorded one assist.
“Opening the season with two conference wins is a big confidence booster and makes us look forward to every other game,” Lausell said. “We had good possession during this game and knew where to pass it which comes down to the really good chemistry this team has.”
Goalie Hope Hillhouse had one save to record a shutout.
Blinn took off with a 4-0 lead in the first half. The Buccaneers took a 1-0 lead when Northeast Texas scored an own goal in the 20th minute. Then, Vital scored the next two goals in the 30th and 41st minutes for the Buccaneers to lead 3-0. Both of Vital’s goals were assisted by Zachos. Gomez scored in the 44th minute and was assisted by Vital for the final goal of the half.
In the 52nd minute, Lausell passed the ball off to Zachos to score and extend Blinn’s lead to 5-0 for good.
Next, the Buccaneers will take on Jacksonville College on Friday, April 9, at 3 p.m. at Rankin Field. The Blinn men’s soccer team will take on Jacksonville at 5 p.m. to conclude the doubleheader.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
