A heavy law enforcement presence at The Retreat Apartments in Sealy Thursday ended peacefully after officers safely took a man into custody following reports that he had made threatening statements during what police described as a personal crisis.
According to the Sealy Police Department, officers responded to The Retreat Apartments, located at 1500 Highway 90 West, after receiving information that a male resident had allegedly made threatening statements toward family members and law enforcement.
Because the individual was believed to have access to firearms, officers established a perimeter around the apartment complex and attempted to contact him by telephone. When those efforts were unsuccessful, the Austin County Regional Special Response Team was requested to assist.
As the situation unfolded, residents inside the apartment complex were asked to remain in their apartments while officers worked to secure the area. The public was also asked to avoid the area until the incident was resolved.
Additional assistance was provided by the Austin County Sheriff’s Office, Austin County ESD No. 2 Fire and EMS, the San Felipe Police Department, and the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol.
After arriving on scene, members of the Austin County Regional Special Response Team attempted to make contact with the resident. When he failed to respond, officers deployed less-lethal devices in an effort to safely resolve the situation. The team subsequently made contact with the man and took him into custody without further incident.
The man was turned over to the Sealy Police Department and transported to a hospital for medical and mental health evaluation.
Police said there were no reported injuries, and the incident concluded without further threat to the public. Once the scene was secured, authorities announced that law enforcement and first responders would remain on scene for a short time while concluding the investigation.
The Sealy Police Department thanked the Austin County Regional Special Response Team, assisting agencies, apartment management, residents, and the surrounding community for their cooperation throughout the incident.
No additional information about the individual has been released at this time.
