The Blinn College esports team dropped a Super Smash Bros Ultimate match to Dallas Baptist University on Thursday.
Dallas Baptist defeated the Buccaneers 2-0 in a best-of-three series to claim the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) Varsity Premier league match.
Competing for Blinn were sophomore and freshmen Gage Cole, Dillon Scott, and Alejandro Cerda.
“While the outcome wasn’t what we were hoping for, we saw some clear improvement in our team’s performance, especially with the debut of Alejandro, who was brought up to the varsity team from JV,” Blinn assistant coach and Super Smash Bros manager Kyle Murto said. “For his first-ever varsity match, Alejandro showed a lot of potential and has a promising future on the roster. This semester is shaping up to be a developmental period for the team, as we focus on building up skills and team cohesion. Our goal is to not only compete at our highest level this season but also prepare our players for the spring season.”
Blinn’s Super Smash Bros team will continue its season with a NACE matchup against the University of Southern Mississippi at 6 p.m. on Sept. 26.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 national championships since 1987.
