On Tuesday, a Texas deputy constable was fatally shot near the 8900 block of Richmond Avenue in Houston.  Maher Husseini, the deputy involved, was approached by an assailant who fired multiple shots into his SUV as he sat at the intersection according to Houston police. Initial reports indicate that Officer Husseini was not in uniform when he was shot. The officer was taken to Ben Taub hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officer Husseini had served as a Harris County constable since 2021 and patrolled the South-Central district. The motivation behind the shooting remains under investigation, with authorities considering whether the suspect knew Officer Husseini and this was a targeted attack or if it was a random act of road rage.

After the fatal shooting the suspect, who was described as a man of Asian/Middle Eastern descent between 35 and 40 years old, fled in his vehicle and was later spotted in League City. Officers pursued the suspect from League City into Galveston. The chase ended in Galveston where the suspect crashed his car into Galveston Bay and then attempted to swim away from the police. Authorities were able to rescue the man from the water with the aid of boats and a marine unit. The suspect, later identified as Athir Murady, was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

“The dangerous criminal who ambushed and murdered Deputy Constable Husseini will have the full weight of the law brought down upon him,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement. Words of support continue to pour in from all over the state of Texas. Our hearts go out to the family and the community at large.
