Food in mason jars on a shelf offered through cottage food business
The program June 24 in Belton will address how to start a cottage food business.

For those interested in selling from a cottage food business – foods made in the home – but not knowing how to get started, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service has the program for you.

The AgriLife Extension offices in Williamson and Bell counties will be presenting the “Cooking Up a Cottage Food Business” program from 4-7 p.m. June 24. The program will be held at the office in Bell County, located at 1605 N. Main St., Suite 102 in Belton.

The cost of this class is $25. To register, go to https://williamson.agrilife.org/ or call the AgriLife Extension office in Bell County at 254-933-5305.

Regulations and certification

“Texas Cottage Food Laws allow individuals to sell homemade food for profit,” said Andrea Haubner, AgriLife Extension family and community health agent, Williamson County. “These laws regulate what can and cannot be sold as well as address food safety, labeling and recipe requirements. All these regulations can be overwhelming to those wanting to sell homemade food items, and that’s why we address them in this program.”

Through this presentation, participants can also receive their food handler’s certification in under two hours.

“This certification is required for all food service employees in the state of Texas and is accredited by the Texas Department of State Health Services,” said Jackie McLaughlin, AgriLife Extension family and community health agent, Bell County. “The class covers food safety practices including cross contamination, personal hygiene, and time and temperature abuse.”

For more information, contact Haubner at 512-943-3300 or McLaughlin at 254-933-5305.
